J5 Create USB Hub Driver Install (macOS)

** Important ** The J5 Hub is only for 2012-2019 MacBook

These instructions are for checking the current macOS version installed on your MacBook, how to upgrade/update macOS, and how to install the driver software for the J5 USB hub being provided to some teaching staff for Hybrid instruction.

macOS Catalina
  • Please confirm that you are running macOS Catalina (10.15). HERE is how you check the macOS version installed on your MacBook.
  • If you are NOT on macOS Catalina, HERE are the steps to upgrade to macOS Catalina.
    • Note: Do NOT install macOS Big Sur. There are software compatibility issues with Big Sur.
    • If your MacBook is running Big Sur, then please contact the Help Desk, as we will need to help determine if your computer needs to be downgraded to Catalina.
  • If you are already running macOS Catalina, then please check to see if there are any pending updates to Catalina. HERE are the steps to check for Catalina updates.
    • Note: Do NOT install macOS Big Sur. There are software compatibility issues with Big Sur.
J5 USB Hub Driver - ONLY for 2012-2019 MacBooks, NOT for 2020 MacBooks
  • Once you have confirmed or upgraded to macOS Catalina, then please install the J5 Driver software (ONLY for 2012-2019 MacBooks, NOT for 2020 MacBooks). The J5 USB hub will be used to connect your MacBook to an external monitor, wired ethernet connection, and USB devices (i.e. webcam, document camera, printer, etc.).
  • HERE are the steps to install the J5 Driver software.
  • You can also watch a video showing the driver installation process.
    • ** Important ** Do NOT plug the J5 hub in to your MacBook until you have installed the driver software and then restarted your computer.
    • The J5 USB hub is only for 2012-2019 MacBook users. Staff that have a newer 2020 MacBook will not be using the J5 hub. 2020 MacBooks only have USB-C ports.
