Steps to upgrade to macOS Catalina (10.15.x)
  • Perform the macOS Catalina upgrade at a time that you do not need your computer for at least 60-90 minutes.
  • Connect your MacBook to a power cord
  • Close all your open applications
  • Check that your computer has at least 20GB of free storage space
    • Click on the Apple symbol in the upper right of your screen, and then "About this Mac".
    • Click on the Storage tab, and then look for the "xxx GB available of xxx GB" just above the bar graph.
    • If your computer does not have at least 20GB available, then find files from your downloads, documents, and desktop folders that you can delete. Once you have deleted some files, then empty your trash.
    • Call the FGSD Helpdesk if you would like assistance with checking storage space or freeing up storage space.

  • After confirming that your computer has at least 20GB of free storage space, click on the following link to download and install macOS Catalina.
    • You should be redirected to the App Store. Click on the Get/Download option and follow the prompts to download and install macOS Catalina.
    • The upgrade will force a restart of the computer, and then a progress bar will appear on the screen with the Apple symbol.
    • Allow for at least 45-60 minutes for the installation to download and install.
  • After the computer returns to the login screen, log back in to the MacBook, and then check for any remaining updates to macOS Catalina.
