Apple Silicon M1 Series Macbook Setup
FOR TECH USE ONLY


Initial Setup

  1. Unbox the computer

  2. Place Asset ID on the bottom of the Macbook just under the preplaced text

  3. Open the JAMF Console (https://fgsd.jamfcloud.com/) and login

  4. Verify the computer is in the PRIMARY STAFF PRESTAGE with the instructions below:

    1. Click on the GEAR icon in the top right hand corner of the console (SETTINGS)

    2. Click on AUTOMATED DEVICE ENROLLMENT from the GLOBAL MANAGEMENT group

    3. Click on FGSD-JAMF

    4. Click on DEVICES

    5. Using the FILTER search box, input your device serial number

    6. Once found, it should show the Primary Staff PreStage under the column header of Prestage Enrollments

      1. If the device is not in the Primary Staff PreStage please follow these directions to change it:

        1. Click on COMPUTERS in the top left corner

        2. Click on PreStage Enrollments

        3. Click on the Group that the Computer is currently in (DO-Staff, FH-Staff, Etc.)

        4. Click on SCOPE

        5. Click on EDIT

        6. Click on the FILTER search field at the top of the list and input the serial number of the device

        7. Uncheck the box to the left of the serial number in the list

        8. Click SAVE

        9. Click on PreStage Enrollments again to get back to the list of Enrollment Groups

        10. Click on the Group that the Computer will be moved to (DO-Student, FH-Student, Etc.)

        11. Click on SCOPE

        12. Click on EDIT

        13. Click on the FILTER search field at the top of the list and input the serial number of your device

        14. Check the box to the left of the serial number in the list

        15. Click SAVE

      2. If you do not see the device in the list, it means it is not in DEP and will need to be added. Please contact JD (jgates@fgsd.k12.or.us or x4517)

  5. On another Mac Computer, follow the instructions from Apple on how to make a USB Installer for the OS you’re wanting to install (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372)

  6. Plug the USB into the computer as well as Power, and an Ethernet connection

 (It is possible with having power, ethernet, and a USB you will need to use a USB-C Hub)


**This guide will reference all OS as macOS Big Sur. Please note that this will apply to other macOS going forward and is not hard set as ONLY Big Sur. Going forward you will only see macOS Big Sur.**


  1. Press and HOLD the power button. 

    1. The Apple Symbol will show with a “Continue Holding down for startup options” message (roughly 10 seconds)

    2. Let go when you see it switch to “Loading Startup Options”

  2. From the menu options that are now showing, select the “Install macOS Big Sur” icon

  3. Click the Continue Button

  4. In the Language prompt select English and press the right arrow in the bottom right corner

  5. When you see the macOS Big Sur  screen come up with the Blue Continue button at the bottom, click on the menu item at the top left for Install macOS Big Sur and select Quit Install macOS

  6. Select Disk Utility from the menu options

  7. Just to the left of the Disk Utility title there is a small sidebar icon, click it and select the option for Show All Devices

  8. On the left sidebar you’ll see an option for Apple SSD, left click it to select it

  9. In the upper right corner, click the Erase button

  10. In the new prompt click Erase in the lower right corner

  11. In the new prompt, click the red text button for Erase Mac…

  12. Click red text button Erase Mac and Restart

  13. The Macbook will restart and come back up to an Activate Mac screen. Wait until it says Your Mac is Activated

  14. Click on the Apple in the top right and select Shut Down

  15. Press and HOLD the power button. 

    1. The Apple Symbol will show with a “Continue Holding down for startup options” message (roughly 10 seconds)

    2. Let go when you see it switch to “Loading Startup Options”

  16. From the menu options that are now showing, select the “Install macOS Big Sur” icon

  17. Click the Continue Button

  18. In the Language prompt select English and press the right arrow in the bottom right corner

  19. When you see the macOS Big Sur  screen come up with the Blue Continue button at the bottom, click Continue

  20. Agree to the Terms of Services agreement

  21. Click Agree on the new pop-up prompt

  22. Click on the Untitled Drive (most likely on the left)

  23. Click Continue

Enroll

  1. The computer will come up with the startup page, if you give it a few minutes it should jump itself to the Remote Management screen and a popup prompt to sign in

  2. Sign in using the dostaff username and password (the password can be found in the Password Spreadsheet)

  3. Click on Use Location Services in the “Are you sure you don’t want to use Location Services Prompt”

Software Configuration

  1. Power the computer on, if it is not currently running

  2. On the Forest Grove School District Login page, click on the gray button at the bottom of the screen that says Local Login

  3. Sign in with the macadmin username and password (the password can be found in the Password Spreadsheet)

  4. In “Your administrator requires that you enable FileVault” click the Enable Now button. Followed by clicking the OK button in the follow up prompt

  5. The desktop should finally load, when it does you will see a prompt that states an error occurred, if you wait, it will work itself out and pull up the DEPNotify screen with the title Welcome to Forest Grove School District

  6. Click the Register Your Mac button

  7. Fill in the Username and the Asset ID and click Register your Mac

    1. If you do not have a user that will be using this computer, you can fill the field in with dostaff or something nonspecific. This field will just be used to update the username in the JAMF console for this computer and can be changed later

  8. The DEPNotify process can take anywhere from 15 - 20 minutes to complete. 

    1. DEPNotify will now run numerous scripts and application installs. The status will be shown through a progress bar as well as text below the progress bar of what the application is doing. DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER. Once the process has started, you cannot pick up where you left off if need be, later. You will have to start at the beginning if this process does not complete.

  9. When DEPNotify has finished you will see a Restart button, please click it

  10. Once the computer has restarted you will see a Filevault login screen for macadmin please login

  11. At the JAMF Connect screen click the button for Local Login

  12. Sign in with macadmin

  13. Open the FGSDSelfService application (White fir tree with a black background icon)

  14. On the left side click on the Enrollment section

  15. Under the Domain Bind option click Run

  16. Click OK

  17. Click OK

  18. Click OK

  19. Click OK

  20. Enter the macadmin password (use the password vault to ascertain the password if need be)

  21. Enter the fgsd-bind password (use the password vault to ascertain the password if need be)

  22. Click OK

  23. Click OK

  24. Click OK

  25. Open Google Chrome and check for Software Updates

  26. Open Zoom and check for Software Updates

  27. Click on the Apple symbol in the top left corner of the desktop

  28. Click System Preferences

  29. Inside the System Preferences window click the option for Software Update

  30. Under the section titled Other Updates Available click on the link for More Info

  31. Check off all options in the list and click Update

  32. Once the prep has finished for the install to happen, click Restart when the button shows

    1. You might need to do this a few times to get through all the updates available 

  33. Open the JAMF Console (https://fgsd.jamfcloud.com/) and login

  34. Search for the computer by its serial number or Asset ID

  35. Once found please click on the computer’s serial number link to open the computer’s data

  36. While under the General section, scroll down to Asset Tag: and verify the Asset ID is correct based on the sticker of the computer

    1. If incorrect, scroll back up and click Edit in top right corner

    2. Find the Asset Tag section and type in the Asset ID from the sticker on the computer

    3. Click Save

  37. On the left click on User & Location 

  38. Click Edit in the top right corner

  39. Verify the username field is correct with the username of the person getting the computer

    1. If no one is getting the computer, you can leave the username placeholder until it is assigned

  40. Click Search

  41. The fields below the Username should update with the accurate information for the user. Please verify it is correct and click Save in the top right corner
